Commander's Communique for May 17, 2013

The Commander Encourages All Legionnaires to take action and contact your State Senator Today regarding the letter
 below!

During the Wisconsin American Legion Spring Conference, held  in Portage, WI May 10 and 11, our Veterans Affairs and Legislative Committees had occasion to study the ramifications of SB 13 and the accompanying AB 19 as relates to asbestos and Mesothelioma. At the conclusion of this study both committees voted to recommend that the Wisconsin American Legion go on record opposing the above mentioned legislation. The Department Executive Committee voted unanimously to endorse opposition of the aforementioned bills.

Many Wisconsin veterans were exposed to asbestos during their military service. Of those who suffer the effects of Mesothelioma, thirty percent (30%) are veterans.

The effect of passing this legislation would be to place an undue delay for veteran’s seeking to enforce their rights through litigation. As an additional consequence, unreasonable burdens of proof would be placed on veterans suffering the effects of Mesothelioma and their family members.

Consequently, the Wisconsin American Legion opposes the proposed legislation and urges the Wisconsin State Senate to reject SB 13.

Respectfully,

Wayne W. Jensen
